kiln trouble-need clue

I have a small Gare kiln that is seldom used for anything more than
warming a raku load. Today I ran 5 pieces in it to cone 6 for my Mother.
It is her kiln, her work, The kiln should have cut off by now - I checked
on it and found it cooled to 281 degrees - it was started at 10:30 am and
it is now 11 pm. I lifted the lid and one glaze looks close to fired, the
other is matt and under fired looking. The kiln sitter has not shut off,
and the light was out - I checked the breaker box and the breaker was
thrown for that kiln, nothing else. There have been no surges or oddities
that I am aware of. I do not have a clue as to what to investigate. Any
suggestions?

Sandra, It sounds like you are drawing more current that what your breaker
will allow. Since you only used it at low temperatures, you never were aware
of the problem. Now that it is drawing more electricity than what the
breaker allows it trips - this is a fire waiting to happen! Check your
kiln's owners manual if you have one to see what it recommended for that
model kiln's amps.
Chris from Euclid's Elements is often scanning this site. He is the wizard
of electric kilns
(in my humble opinion) maybe he can help with this problem.
