gold filling cracks

updated sun 22 feb 98

I've seen several pieces on the net and in books where the artist has
filled cracks with gold. Can anyone describe a technique for doing this?
I'm guessing that gold leafing is used in some cases but what if the
crack goes through the piece?

You can fill the crack with about anything. I use bondo (yes, the same stuff
you use to fix that dint in your fender) or epoxy putty. The putty has the
consistance of firm clay and can be modeled to form, the bondo can be sanded to
fit any form. Then apply gold leaf, gold wax or liquid gold paint over the top
to conceal your patch job.

John Miles, I have used a material called Dental gold, given to me by a
dentist in Japan,25 years ago. I mixed this with an epoxy cement and
applied to cracked,(Sometimes complete shards) pots with a syringe,(#50
needle, cut off close to the attachment cap.) My feeling is that any repair
should be neat, rounded and always obvious. don morrillAt 08:28 2/20/98 EST,

John,

I'm not sure how the gold fillings are done, but was told that the
technique was adapted from dental work. So, ask your friendly dentist next
time you find yourself in the chair with your mouth full of hardware and
hands. Or, maybe you can find a more opportune time, when you can
both talk.
