squeaking pacifica wheel belts

Hi Amy and all other Pacifica wheel owners,

I have a Pacifica GT 400 wheel that I purchased new in 1983, when Pacifica
Crafts of Ferndale WA. made them before selling the line to Laguna. I've
found the wheel to be a solid workhorse over all the years. My wheel has 4
round belts of an unspecified material that is green in color.

While the belt material may have changed since then--I don't know as I've
yet to have to replace one--my instruction sheet says to "...get a piece of
chalk or powdery, dry clay. While the wheel is running at about half speed,
lightly press chalky substance against the inside of the belts until
squeaking stops--usually a couple of revolutions." I've only had to do this
once back in about 1985. They haven't squeaked since. Worth a try, I think
as it doesn't involve any substances that could increase slippage or act as
a solvent that might weaken the belt material.

Tension of the belts must also be proper. The instructions say, "Belts
should be adjusted with the wheel standing on its feet. Tighten belt
tension wingnut until belt flexes 1/4" when pressed with moderate pressure
at the halfway point between the edge of the wheelhead pulley and the motor
pulley. The belts should be just tight enough not to slip when applying
your maximum work load on the throwing head and no tighter than this"

You should run this by the tech at Laguna to see if this might solve your
problem.

Regards, Greg
