Kiln Construction Workshop at Penland School of Crafts
Led by Tracy Dotson
Saturday, April 25-Friday, May 1
Cost: =24150 (includes room and board)

This workshop (limited to five participants) will build an insulating fire
brick, sprung arch kiln for salt and soda firing with loose brick =
construction,
angle iron, and a rollaway door. This is a hands-on, labor intensive (long
days=21) workshop which will include discussions of kiln designs, materials,=
and
matching kilns to potters=B9 needs. There will be an opportunity to to work =
with
individuals on their personal kiln designs. The workshop will culminate with=
the
first firing of the new kiln. Making ware will not be a part of this =
workshop,
but participants may bring a few bisqued pots suitable for cone-10 salt =
firing.

Tracy Dotson has built over two-hundred kilns during his thirty-five years =
as a
studio potter, kiln builder, and perpetual student. He has taught, built, =
and
studied throughout the country including University of Texas in Austin and =
at
Alfred University. Tracy and his wife, Catherine Dotson, live and make pots =
just
down the road from Penland School.

I've read and heard good things about Mr. Dotson, but are you sure this =
figure
is true? That's an average of 5.7 kilns per year. That's a lot of damn =
kilns.
I've built eleven kilns in the last eleven years from small low fire salt, =
to
fast freddies, to sprung arch down draft salt/soda, to cat cross draft wood
kilns and I thought that was a pretty good pace.
