I am in the process of developing a pottery web-site featuring
bulletin boards with the potter in mind. I would appreciate any input as
to what topic headings you would like to see placed on these bulletin
boards. For example one board could be devoted to glazes, another board to
firing schedules, another to kiln building, another to claybodies, another
to marketing, etc.. etc... You have the idea. If you want to be a part of
designing this site then please contact me directly at .
Rank the board headings that you would like to see in order of preference
plus please submit any other ideas that you might have. I am determined to
make this THE Premier web-site for potters.... Your suggestions and
comments are welcomed. ....Marshall

Hi Marshell, Just don't forget the newbies. Maybe a board they can go to
with terminologies etc. Stuff to the pro's are commen sence, but not so to
someone who hasn't even heard it yet. Maybe common facts about pottery.
Do's and dont's. Questions and Answers. Sources. Web sites to go to.
Not everyone has materials that they can get. My public library has very
limited books to check out. Mostly collector books, not many 'how to' books.
Just a thought........ Mj

Marshall-
Here are some other suggestions for sections of your website
1. Education- with program listings and links to other education sites.
2. Apprenticeships and Internships - good place to list available positions.
3. Books, Magazines and Videos - with links to book stores who have great
clay books.
The exhibitions section would be great if it were arranged by location.
Good luck,

What do folks think about the idea of a place for potters to let other
potters know they'd be welcome to overnight lodging when they're traveling
through town?

As I recall, The Studio Potter Network, started by Gerry Williams? in New
Hampshire I think (seperate identity from Studio Potter Magazine), does just
that - perhaps you should check with them. I am sure they will be
represented at NCECA.

You're discribing the STUDIO POTTER BED and BREAKFAST NETWORK directory.
Contact Robert Compton and he'll point you there. He's at

Probably most of these topics would fit into the Potters' Lounge msg board
for now... I hope that you visit the site and leave a few messages...

Mabey someone already said this and I missed it (if so sorry)
How about "Call for Entries" for exhibitions (functional and sculptural
please)
and also Gallery listings to refer each other to good places to contact on
representing our work. This could also include information to stay away from
those galleries that are not so great to work with.

I checked this out at your suggestion and it is exactly what I was
thinking of, except it is limited to people who are members of the Studio
Potters Network, who--it seems--must be members of a formal potters group.
What about people who are not members of a guild, etc. My thought was that
anyone on clayart would be able to post their willingness to host itinerant
potters on their way through town, etc.

I think that without offending Robert Compton, we can add something to the
effect that some of us can put other potters up for a night or two. I know
Bob will understand if I can't really call my self a Bed and Breakfast. :-)

How about this idea??
Maybe all of us are not trusting enough to let "stangers" into our house
for the night, but how about in the yard?? We could have a list of folks
with a yard big enough to park a travel trailer in for the night, or even
put up a tent, in exchange for others who might be able to do the same.
We live near Leesburg, which is not all that far from Orlando, Florida,
and would be willing to do this. We could have spots listed for all over
the country. It would be fun to have folks come who are interested in pottery.
I would be willing to keep the list, and maybe send it as an attachment to
all who wanted to join the group,---- or on a floppy, for a small fee to
pay the expense.
If you mailed me direct, that way all the locations would not be posted for
everyone , no matter who, to see.
What do you all think?? I could put each listing on a card in the
"Cardfile", program I have, and that way, they could be listed
alphabetically, simply, maybe by state.
If anyone thinks this is a good idea, and might work, let me know. The
airstream trailer people used to do this, and it worked for them.
I have met one of the faculty at Gainsville, and maybe our list server
could check ME out, to begin with,--hopefully she will remember me.
