The following glaze, Red Reserve (from Birk's "The Complete Potters
Companion"), is a smooth black in oxidation if even moderately thick. If
thin enough, it is a purplish red. It is food-safe (see my post today,
"saturated iron is safe"). It does interesting things over and under other
glazes.
