kiln shelf config

Hi All,
I'm considering buying some new kiln shelves for my gas kiln but I'm
having trouble with the size. My exisitng kiln is 36 inches deep from
the door to the back. It's 22 inches wide inside the bagwalls. I've
been using a shelf configration of 2 16 by 20 shelves, leaving an inch
of clearance on either side of the bag walls and 4 inches at the
front. I leave no clearance at the back wall. My size choice for the
new shelves is either 16 by 18 or 18 by 18. Since I'm trying to keep
close to the size I'm used to, I'm tempted to go with the 18 by 18,
which will give more clearance in the sides than I had, but will
eliminate the clearance at the front. So the shelves will butt the back
wall and will touch the door. Do you think this will inhibit the flame
path even though there will be 2 inches of clearance on the sides? I
know that the 16 by 18 shelves are the safe bet, but I will have to
give up putting 2 dinner plates on a shelf. Whaddya think? Another
option would be to use the 16 by 18's for the first few courses of
the stack and then switch to the 18 by 18's from there up. Anyone got a
tight stack like this that works okay?
Also, if anyone is using Advancers and has had warping, please let me
know.
Take Care
Jennifer

Jennifer, Why not buy half of each size? It seems that that way you get the
needed one inch gap all the way around. You would end up with some shelves
for dinner plates and some for slightly smaller ones. If you are reaching
in to the kiln, the 16" ones might be kinder on your back if that "bung" is
against the back wall.
