Friday Feb 27th I attended (with over 1000 people) the opening of Ah
Leon's Bridge at the Phoenix Art Museum, Bridge is the world premiere
of a 66 foot long ceramic sculpture by Taiwanese artist Ah Leon. This
extraordinary work pushes the boundary between illusion and reality with
its masterful tromp l'oeil effects. At first appearance the sculpture
seems to be an old, decaying wooden bridge with texture and color of
wood and old nails, bent and rusted, like real iron. In fact, every
detail and component of Bridge, including the protruding rusty nails
that tack down the boards, is made from high fire stoneware. Ah Leon
has attained an unsurpassable level of craftsmanship with Bridge, while
also giving expression to a wry sense of humor and irony, forcing the
viewer to question the boundaries of reality. The Bridge was at the
Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian, Washington, D.C. in Feb 1997 and the LVM
Museum in Madison, Wisconsin Dec 1997. The Bridge will be at the Phoenix
Art Museum until April 19, 1998.
Ah Leon directed the first Yixing symposium for western potters in 1996
and planning the second one in May 1999.
Ah Leon has been giving workshop and slide/lectures in the USA for many
years.
