Hi all, I am thinking of building a log studio and a log home. Has any
body tried a log home company, there are so many it is hard to figure out
who to use.
Any advice would be welcome

Mark,
You could try calling True North log homes based in Ontario. They have
a revolutionary design that sounded quite impressive to me when we
visited their model home. They have quotes in their promo materials
from Doris Muir, owner/editor of Original Log Home Guide as one of the
best log home systems in North America.
They have patented some of their technology, much of which is based on
the way corners are put together. It's also a family run business, so
it seemed that there was a lot of sweat equity put into their business.
They also have designs for warmer climates. They can be reached at
(705) 645-3097, fax (705) 645-4256 and there's a toll free number which
may work if you're calling from the States 1-800-661-1628.
The usual disclaimers blah blah blah.

Mark, i live in the Bitterroot valley in MOntana Within 12 miles of me are
no less than six log home builders. If you are staying in Miami, you don't
have to worry about insulation from the cold. But make sure you get logs
that are dried they tell me kiln dried logs are best because they will not
dry up and crack as much. The first thing you need to decide is if you want
a log home without the "caulking" that they put between the logs (these
look much more finished and I think formal or one in which you can see the
spaces where they add the fill If you look in the back of a log home mag.
there ususally is a list of builders. THere are some much closer to you I
think in the Carolinas.. If you have any specific quesstions, I would be
glad to forward them to the companies here. We have ALpine, Northwest, and
several others. I'm in Hamilton. Mt. I hope to have my log home and studio
with the next year or so. Good Luck! Sherry Morrow -----Original

I missed the original question -- is someone considerng a log house or studio
??--- rest assured that this is one of the most expensive ways to build, and
despite what those who sell them tell you, far from maintenance free and
questionable in energy efficiency -- if looking for efficient and inexpensive
suggest you try cordwood masonry -- contact Rob Roy in West Chazy, NY -- also
he has several books out on the topic

A word to the wise... Build a standard construction house and/or studio
and then apply "LOG SIDING"... Cedar is far superior to any type of pine
siding and it does cost considerably more. Insects hate cedar... Again
just my $0.00002 worth. ...Marshall

I'm deeply disappointed in all the contributors to this thread, that you
haven't selected a wattle-walled Persian hut with cobalt decorations on the
fired walls. The kiln as dwelling! What could be more appropos to a forum
about clay?
I'd be with you in a heartbeat myself, of course, except I'm not into the
blues these days ... more reds lately, tinkering with tin and copper. And
yes, I've been told I've got a lot of brass.
Wish I had a little more in the bank account!

If fyou are also interested in low heating bills and are not totally
committed to log construction, have you looked into post and beam
framing? We were interested in log homes when we rebuilt our home in
'81. We also were interested in passive solar energy. We did a lot of
reading and looking and decided that we would go with a passive solar
post and beam design by a company out of New York.
Our primary concern became energy efficiency and we felt we could not get
this with any of the then current log homes.
Our home is a post and beam home with a 4 inch envelope of foam insuation
all around (including under) we also have a heat sink of 4 feet of sand
under the floor to help store heat. We ended up with the look we wanted
inside with as well as the energy efficiency we wanted. We heat a 1650
square ft. home with one wood stove and less than two pickup loads of
wood a year.
The consruction is pretty basic, we did not do true mortise and tenon?
joints but used lapped and some notced, although someone else in our
area did use the traditional joints.
I would be happy to give more info if you are interested.
