I would really love to hear more about this.
Do you think that the motor oil assists in the crackle of the glaze or the
darkness of the smoke. Does it also do a "sealant" type of thing with the
surface? Does it smell?

Please share some more about this

I feel a bit of a nit because I don't know WHY this works so well!
Think it probably does assist in the darkness of the smoke, the
crackles are a lovely dark colour.
I have never used Raku fired ware as as anything other that
decorative, welllllll maybe a a fruit bowl or ashtray, have not tested
glazed / fired porosity, shoulndn't think it would hold water.......
but the feel of the finished article is really lovely, makes me think
of antique porcelain when I hold it.
When you dunk the pot into the oil it is a bit smelly, but not too
disgusting.
Clean up takes a bit of scrubbing, but for that white crackle it is
worth it, just looks and feel so good.
