My wife has been invited on a 5-week lecture tour in Japan in May/June
1998, which will take us to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Fukuoka. We would
both like to take advantage of our stay in Japan to visit a few pottery
centers in or near those cities, or along the way. I would very much
appreciate any suggestions and tips you may have about places to visit and to
stay at, potters (or potters' guilds) to contact, etiquette to follow, prior
arrangements to make, etc. I realize that potters are very busy people and
may not have much time to receive visitors, but I would really welcome an
opportunity to visit a few studios and to observe and talk to some potters at
work.
My main interest lies in functional pottery. I work in stoneware and
fire my pieces in a gas kiln. I have always been attracted to Japanese
pottery, and look forward to this trip immensely.
