To the person that asked what a Giffen Grip is, I can only tell you from a
beginner's standpoint. There may be applications I am unaware of. It is a
tool that you attach to the wheel primarily used as a centering device for
trimming. I have found it very helpful and time saving. Helpful in that I
can easily remove my piece several times in the process of trimmming to
check shape and feel, whereas I am much less inclined to do so when I have
spent time sticking the piece to the wheel with pieces of clay. Now, due to
a tip on Clayart, I have also used it to stabilize a pot while burnishing
and it works fast. You can trim tops and bottoms just as easily.

Question: How does one get a hold of a copy/subscription of Ceramic Art and
Perception?

Question: Say, you change your mind. Can you glaze a burnished piece?

Thanks,
Centa

For a picture of a Giffin Grip, look in one of the catalogs that deal in =
pottery
supplies and equipment. I've had mine since the mid-eighties and love it. =
I
use it for trimming (it's intended purpose). In my experience, the rims on =
pots
need to be fairly hard to avoid being squished by the grip's pads (I think =
this
is may be one reason why some potters find it frustrating being used to =
trimming
softer. Generally I don't cover my pots and everything works out fine with =
a
much greater latitude in hardness and less danger of split rims))
Have also used it for burnishing. I also use it for slip decoration during=
the
trimming operation, and then for brushing glaze onto bisqued pots. I do all=
my
bowls and open forms this way now and only dip and pour the vertical ones. =
My
glaze needs to be adjusted with the addition of a very genorous amount of =
CMC
gum to make it free flowing enough to brush.
