Need to have slides scanned. If anyone has experience with this please
advise. I am looking to have colored slides scanned for picture files. I
don't believe most scanners will work for this purpose. Any imput
regarding cost to have a virtual gallery web-page(s) created which would
include about 40 images with artists' names, descriptions and price of item
will be appreciated... Marshall

Marshall,
If the work will not be printed, the best and cheapest way is to have a
Kodak photo CD made. It costs abut 2.50 per slide as opposed to 15.00 per
slide when scanned.

Marshall,

You will need a special scanner attachment to scan slides. Only a few
scanners out there can do this. Another way to avoid spending big money
for a scanner is to have your slides color Xeroxed and then scan the
Xerox into the computer. I pay $1.00 each for a scanned slide here at a
local Staples office store. Good luck.

My local camera shop, Wolf Camera & Video in Atlanta, GA, can transfer
anything photographic to digital for a fee. I have had negatives scanned,
and they were wonderful!!! They have both low & high resolution available,
and I know they offered them done to CD roms or to diskettes - CD's were
hgher cost. Excellent job - if you can't find this service locally, call
call them at their 14th street location.

Scaning photos today is so inexpensive. HP has a scanner with a little
attatched slide scanner. This does a very good job as does most all HP
products. If one scans a slide or photo and converts the scan into a Jpeg =
using
Graphic Converter, the quality of the scan is retained as well as reducing =
the
scan's file size enormously.

A blank cd costs between =241.90 and =242.50. It will hold 650 meg easily. =
Each
time you burn a session, you loose 15 meg. You loose approximately 30 meg =
with
the first burn. My largest scan was aroung 6000K and reduced to jpeg is =
under
250K. Over 90=25 of my reduced scans are under 100K. Do the division. =
That is a
LOT of photos on one cd.

If you take the one letter that said they were charged =249.00 for the blank=
cd
and =241.50 per scan, multiply that times 500 scans this comes up to =24309 =
for one
cd. If you take the =242.00 figure for one scan, that figures up to =241009=
per cd.
You can easily see that a scanner and a cd burner is well worth the price. =
I
have watched these burners come down in price dramatically.

The HP scanner with the slide attatchment is around =24500 I think. I could=
be
off a little here. My Umax scanner is now priced at =24349 and does a =
fantastic
job. My Yamaha 4260 CD-R was =24575.50 with shipping. Ok, burners are not =
for
everyone, but Zip drives are a bargain and their disks hold 95.7 meg. These
will hold an average of 60-70 scans.

Photo's scan just as well as slides. As a matter of fact, scanned photos
IMPROVE over the actual photo without enhancement. It takes less than 2 =
minutes
to scan and convert the scan to Jpeg. It takes 18 minutes to burn a =
complete cd
and 17 minutes to verify. Cd burning is litterally drag and drop, click one
button to write to the cd and go have a cup of coffee.

Check around, perhaps you know a friend that has a scanner and/or a cd =
burner
that they will let you use. I show my friends how to scan and burn as it
virtually costs me nothing. I am not using up anything except a little
electricity, very little electricity. Perhaps several friends can go in
together to buy the cd burner.

Oh yes, one other thing that makes a cd burner attractive, you can use your =
cds
as an extra hard drive. At under =242.00 per cd, this is a lot of hard =
drive
space=21 I use my scanner as a copy machine also.

If anyone wants to know more about scanning and these particular products, =
let
me know via e-mail. I will send you a scan as an attatchment to let you see=
the
quality. I am using a Mac and Mac software that come free with the scanner =
and
burner. It just doesn't get easier than this=21
