Robert,
My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. It sounds like a wonderful
trip.
Yes, I did go to the UK last summer and found that when we were on our own
the book "Potters", published by Ceramic Review and available at the Craft
Potters Association Gallery, Carnaby St, London, was the most useful tool
for targeting those we wished to visit. "Everybody" eats at Cranks, next
door. In London the Victoria and Albert Museum has a fabulous collection on
the top floor. Be sure to call ahead as they are short of staff and close
displays on a rotating basis every day. The British Museum would take a week
to see properly. it has a marvelous collection of ancient Greek pottery with
marvelous descriptions.
We marked the locations of potters we wished to see on a map and then
planned our itinerary for each day to cover four or five of our favorites.
We often inadvertently saw a lot more of the countryside than we had planned
to as we hunted for the places, which just added to the charm and sometimes
surprise discoveries of bonus treasures. The two big museums in
Stoke-On-Trent were wonderful and so diverse. Mick and Shiela Casson's is a
must and Toff Milway is nearby. If you'll be in Devon, the Devon Craftsmens
Guild Gallery in Bovey Tracey is a must, as is John Leach's, in Somerset. We
met Nick Reese here too. Ruth Ann Tudball is in Reading,
Calling ahead is always a good idea. We visited over 50 potters and many
galleries in the four weeks we four traveled together, then I went to Bath
Potters Supplies in Bath for a one week glaze course with Mike Bailey and
had a wonderful time with the gang there. After that I switched to
genealogist mode and went hunting dead ancestors in northern Scotland and
North Ireland, finding lots of farmers and a few pirates in the lot, and
still managed to find the occassional potter along the way. In Edinborough
my B&B was run by a potter friend of potter Mary Rich whom we had visited in
Cornwall. Mary gave me her number.
It would be fun to be your helper. You will have so much fun.
Regards, Daphne
