I've been skimming the messages on this thread -- so hard to teach well
because you have to know so much about how different people learn.
I can't pretend to be a good teacher. I'm hopelessly impulsive and noisy,
with poor attentional controls (see? i know the buzzwords!). But I
learned a whole lot about basic communication and teaching by reading a
book that i haven't seen referred to here. So it is, being referred to:
How to Talk So Kids Can Learn (at home and in school)
by
Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish
pub 1995,
1996 paperback edition Fireside Books (Sion & Schuster)
$11 US, $15 CDN
I am believer. I used this to help myself avoid the "homework
wars" with my 5th grader. Wish I'd seen it much earlier in his
life (and mine)!
