throwing slabs

Thanks to Shan, Marcia & Cindy for the slab throwing instructions. I
scrubbed a section of the garage floor (didn't know it was that color)
and went for it. Of course, I started out on the table, then moved to
floor throwing. I splatted a few because I tended to throw vertically
(as you warned not to, Marcia!). Practice is definitely the key to
success. Shan, your hint to throw as if skipping a stone was sooooo
helpful! I think I've finally got the hang of it! And it's fun!!!!

Big Dog thought this was a great game! The piece of the slab with her
front paws and teeth impressions has been carefully cut and will be
lovingly preserved. Should go well with the pots bearing her nose
imprint!

By the way, I love Jeff Oestreich's pots

Maurice, you asked about slab throwing?
You take some wedged clay and throw the ball spiral down on a =
canvas board(I think this stops cracks when you spread the clay out in a =
spiral....I don't know if I could prove it....but I do it)....Then you =
just pick it up and turn it over....Eva Wong showed us slapping it =
around to make it behave faster, and she says it compresses the clay and =
stops cracks.......Anyway...Once you get the ball shaped like a thick =
pancake you just turn it over and lay it down...As you lay it down it =
stretches toward the last part you lay down....You just keep turning it =
over and over and It keeps getting wider and wider....You don't actually =
throw it...You just turn it over and lay it down....You can very easily =
make slabs an eighth inch thick as big as you have clay to go there =
with....I usually go around the edge tapping with my very cool cherry =
phat rib that Kimi Wolfe gave me...I love that thing...The tapping keeps =
the spread in control a little...
Oestreich's workshop had much much more than slab throwing....Maybe =
you can catch him somewhere else
