white underglaze

updated mon 30 mar 98

I have some dark brown clay and want to highlight the relief on pots with =
white
(applying to bisque and rubbing off). I've read the posts on making =
underglaze
but I'm at a loss for what to use for white. Would plain zircopax with a =
flux
work? Should there be some clay in it. This clay fires to Cone 5 and I'll
probably follow it up with a matte clear glaze after another bisque fire.

Thanks for your help.

couldn't you use some form of white slip. I've applyed white porcilen slip
to my sandstone or soldate for white relief. It works well...especially if i
then glaze with celadon or clear. The clear turns gray on the sandstone and
remains clear on the porcilen...the celedon is a browish green and a pure
applegreen on the porcilen.

I'm sure that is not how u spell porcilen...but i can't think right
now....actually i can never think :)

By the way the overbisqued pots I had came out perfectly from the Kiln. I
heated them on top of the bisque other stuff was bisquing. Then I dipped them
in glaze when they were still hot. The glaze stayed on and they look great.
I'm glad I didn't break them since they were sort of special pieces.

Hi Carla...Carlton Ball used kiln wash as a very good white slip on red
body. I have used it as well, many times, over texture and it is a
wonderful looking dry slip in/on a rough texture. Try it and see....you
might like it. As Always in Clay Peggy
