I have found that I must have 2 peep holes open in order to see cones - one
just isn't enough. Brushing a line of black iron oxide and water up the
full length of each cone really helps also. For me, this latter step was
only necessary for a glaze firing (cone 6) - not the bisque.

Dear Laurie:
Brushing iron oxide on a cone could affect the cone melt. Maybe you could
choose a more refractory colorant like cobalt or chrome, if you feel the need
to do that.
