Hi All,
I want to decorate a vase for a Raku firing. I would like to do a =
cross-hatch
design(checker board). I want to paint each square a different colour and =
have
the spaces in between come out black.
Question: What kind of tape do I use? I am thinking 1/4=22 or less.
Any suggestion? TIA.

In September 97 Ceramics Monthly Elaine Alt shows how she uses Charettes
black crepe tape - it is flexible and can be used for curves. Now where you
find this product, I've no idea! Does anyone know?

I use shiny Chartpak tape or detailer's tape. Any arts and crafts place
should have the Chartpak and an auto supply store will have the detailer's
tape. When putting them on be sure to burnish it down to keep glaze from
seeping under the edge. Once your glaze is dry you can peel the tape off
and fire. The line will be the black you want in your reduction.

RULING TAPE
The narrow tape that you are seeking is an art supply product. Try your
local art supply store or drafting supply store...it's called "ruling
tape". Crepe style tape is flexible and will bend in curves...there is
also a non crepe style that will work only for straight lines.
An alternative is to make your own: Take a length of masking tape and
lightly tap it onto a piece of glass. Then use an excato knife, razor
blade etc. along with a ruler to cut thin strips...just peel off and use
as you go. More choices in thickness that way and the irregular cuts
look cool too.

If you are very careful you could make a cross-hatch design by using a very
good one inch wide lettering brush, and forget the tape! Just pencil on your
lines for the grid, and paint the glaze where you want it.
Craig Martell does some wonderful checker-board glaze techniques on his pots,
they look great! And he does it free-hand!!
(Craig, hope I didn't blow a trade secret for you !!) ; )

The best tape I have found for separating glazes for Raku firing is called
Letraline. It is made by the Letraset Co. and can be purchased at art
stores. It is primarily a map and chart tape but works perfectly for
separating glaze in Raku work.

Charette is a mail order source for supplies for people like architects
and designers of various types. My catalog is old (94-95) and I don't
see "black crepe tape", but it might be a newer product.
Charette's phone number is 800-367-3729. Good luck.

Charettes black tape is used in drafting and old hand-made graphic design.
I use line tape from Dick Blick (1-800-447-8192), it comes in a variety of
widths. I'm sure it is the same thing.

Does the tape burn off in the firing?
