For those looking at controlling several kilns at once, Digitry has a
controller that will handle from 1 up to 5 individual kilns. You have the
main controller and for each kiln you buy the thermocouple and relays (also
from Digitry). Up to 15 different set points for each kiln. There's also a
single kiln model, but you get the best bang for the buck with the
multi-kiln unit. The Digitry units are considered among the best available
for glass work where temperature control and repeatability / reliability is
essential ( control a firing up to 543 hours long....a minute at a time).
Pricey, but cheaper than individual controllers for each kiln.

I now have a ConeArt kiln (3.3 cu. ft.) with an Orton AutoFire controller -
the Unitemp model. This controller comes with two pyrometers (you can have
three I think) - the controller senses any difference between top and
bottom and adjusts the power so that firings are even from top to bottom. I
was doing a cone 6 firing today and activated the feature that measures the
difference in temp between the two pyrometers. At 1180C the difference
between top and bottom was 1 degree C.
I think this is the way it should be - at last.
This type of controller should be ordered with the kiln so that it can be
installed at the factory. If you have the choice of having the controller
mounted on the wall or the kiln always choose the wall mounted.
There are many features with this controller including multiple ramps up
and down, an alarm, soak periods, - well just about anything you would want
a controller to do.
Cost is a bit pricey - mine costs about $900 Canadian - about 750 American
I guess.

has anyone had experience with digital hand held pyrometers. The ones I =
am looking at send a beam into the kiln or crucible and read the temp. =
They look like something from starwars. the one I am considering runs =
about $2500 and we would use it for bronze as well as the kilns. It says =
it works at temps ranging from 800 to 2400 degrees.
