pottery work relief program

updated fri 10 apr 98

I am looking for information about pottery villages that could use a work =
relief
program. Any information about locations, production capabilities, genre of
pottery or listings would be greatly appreciated. Also, any comments on the
need for this type of program would be great.

Thank you.

I am familiar with 3 pottery villages in Ghana, West Africa which may be
open to this type of idea, email me privately if you are interested in
that area.

Funny you should ask. This was just forwarded to me from the clay
mineralogy listserv. I know nothing about it. Note the email is for the
person who posted the message -- not the original requestor.

The CMS Office received the following request. If you think you can help,
please respond to the fax number given.

Mr. Sanguma Mossai, Head of the Dept. of Education for the Covenant Church
of the Congo, for the Ubangi region of the Congo (Zaire) is looking for any
information on strengthening the clay pots made in his region. Due to the
recent political war and the extreme poverty left from the last regime,
outside sources have basically been cut off. This has left a critical
problem for water jugs to transport drinking water. The old ways of making
pottery had been discarded because the pottery has always been fire fired,
and very weak. There have been recent attempts to build kilns (using the
same clay, firing the bricks as they go), adding already fired clay back
into the clay to strengthen - but none have been a good solution. The
rainforest has been depleted so bigger/more fires could add to that problem
as well. The area IS mineral rich, however. Sources outside the region
cannot be depended upon due to the political and financial situation, as
well as a total lack of infrastructure. ANY help you can give would be
appreciated. Our fax number is 1-612-633-9224.

Sincrely,
Rev. Don N. Johnson
