Janet: You ask about Calgon, the stuff used for years as a TS defloc
agent. Well, the big market was in powdered detergents (washing machine
types mostly) and Calgon Corp. produced and packaged "CALGON" for this
market. In N. America, however, phosphates are restricted in waste waters
so by government edict detergents had to be phosphate-free. With this
market gone, Calgon Corp undoubtedly ceased selling "sodium
hexametaphosphate" a type of soluble "glass"; it contained 67% P2O5
(phosphorus pentoxide, the base unit used by chemists in dealing with
phosporus compounds).
However, Calgon Corp makes several other phosphate products for
many industrial uses. One contains a mix of zinc HMP and sodium HMP,
another contains only zinc HMP. And then there is "CALGONITE" an alkaline
detergent cleaning material that contains substantial amounts of phosphate
in a complex form. It is a heavy-duty industrial cleaner.
Perhaps you (or you supplier) can track down one of these
phosphate materials and use it for floc'ng TS, etc.
Or, one can revert to a mix of soda ash and waterglass (sodium
silicate) as the agent to help TS mixes settle reasonably quickly (say
overnight).
Til later.
