Does anyone have a formula for making mould soap? We are making
plaster slip-casting moulds and your recomendations are appreciated.

TIA

David:

I don't know about *making* mould soap, but I use Murphys Oil Soap. Apply
slowly or it will lather up. An added benefit, it smells nice.

Go to your local pharmacy and ask for a bottle of tincture of green
soap. It has always been the mold soap of choice for me.

Good luck, Debby Grant in NH

This is for Dave Quist. I do not have a formula to make mold soap but I do
have a suggestion that might be a consideration. In the Pottery Making
Magazine(one of the first and they do not list a month, Vol No. but it is
published by Ceramics Monthly and the American Ceramic Society.) There is an
article on using WD40 liquid-the lady buys it by the gallon instead of the
spray can- as a mold release. I have not used it for molds but think it
serves as another option.

She also mentioned another use for WD40 and I have used this and love it!
use it to clean off the sticky goo left from price tags. It works!

Good Luck!

On a tape Joyce Lee's husband so kindly sent me on making plaster molds
from clay heads the recipe called for is 4 parts soy bean oil to 1 part
rubbing alcohol by volume I assume.

I've never tried this. The guy in the tape says he uses it both so the
clay model releases and so the casting comes out smoother. He brushes it
on and allows it to dry a few minutes before pouring the plaster.

Since the original request was for a mold release agent for slip casting,
the above would not be appropriate. Never use any oil-base product (Pam,
WD-40, motor oil, etc.) as a mold release agent if your intent is to
slip-cast, because the oils will seal the surface of the plaster mold. Soap
release agents are carried away by the water, and do not adversely affect
the mold's ability to absorb water out of the slip.

Antoinette
forgive me if I'm sharing some information which you already may
know.

If you make my models out of clay you don't need to use a release
agent. I make most of mine out of clay, then place the model on a thick
piece of glass for casting. The glass , like the clay, self releases
from the plaster. I use cottles which have a formica surface so they
also self release.
When the molds are complete, cured and dried, you also will not need a
release agent for clay pressing .

However if you to make a plaster mold from a plaster model or other hard
surfaced model (other than plastic, vinyl etc) there is a good soap
called 'potter's soap'. available from a place called Douglas and
Sturgess. I have given the URL below. It is also a very informative
sight. Click on 'Mold Release agents' to find Potter's soap.

http://www.artstuf.com/toc.html

Depending on the detail and purpose of the model/mold I have also used
green soap, inexpensive liquid dish soap, vaseline, and spray release
agents with success. I have also used a thin layer of clay slip as a
relese agent in certain situations. Your local pottery supplier may also
carry a mold soap.

Best mold soap is a polyurethane parting compound. Get it from Permaflex in
Columbus Ohio. They are on Livingstone Ave. I do not have that info in this
office.
