Hi,
I've mixed up my first batch of glaze, majolica. However, it is a glossy
base. I would like to be able to take some of the liquid and tone it down
to a more satin finish. Is this possible? I read somewhere you can add
barium carbonate, kaolin, or rutile to make a glaze matt (perhaps at an
earlier stage). Or would I simplify my life by starting over and finding a
majoilica base that is already satin matt? Do the higher fire majolicas
(mid range) tend to be less glossy by nature?
Thanks again,
Centa

Centa,
Tony Hansen's majolica recipe is:
Frit 3195 85
EPK 15
Zircopax 15
To stop crazing, add more silica. If it shivers, add Nephaline Syenite.
This is from his book, Magic of Fire, which contains a chapter on
developing majolica glaze and colors (using stains). I just helped my
girlfriend make up a test batch, as she wants to try majolica, however we
haven't fired it yet.

Hi Centa,
This should be easy - I do need your recipe, the cone fired to, and if the
glaze is moving at all. This has to be done keeping the expansion the same
if the glaze is fitting now. How fast does your kiln cool? - any difference
in the glaze surface from top to bottom of your kiln?
