tilemaker

I bought the tile maker featured @ NCECA by Georgie's on the west coast. ( I
did not make it to NCECA, my mom was diagnosed with Colon Cancer the Saturday
prior to NCECA ) Another story . . . anyway, dear friends told me about it &
brought me lots of goodies including trials with this new TILEMAKER. I
ordered the one for 4X4 tiles. They are a bit pricey but I LOVE IT ! I do
95% of my work on the wheel but this is fun & easy & fast. I think the $50
price will prove to be worth it. It really produces a near perfect tile.
I haven't read anyone else comment on this 'toy'. Does anyone else have
experience with them ?

I agree with Vicki regarding the tile cutter from Georgie's. It takes the
guesswork out of the measuring and frees you up for the 'fun part' of tile
making!

Friends and I recently ordered tile cutters from Bath Potter's Supply. One
friend has been making tiles for fireplaces, kitchens, etc., for nearly
twenty-five years and wanted a new one as back-up in case his old one ceases
to function. He said the cutter from Bath is of excellent quality, heavy and
sharp. The one that he has been using for about twenty-five years was also of
British origin, I think. Including shipping, the 4 by 4 cutters came to just
under forty dollars each. That was a month or so ago. This pleased me: I
arrived home one afternoon to find a package on my doorstep--a real package
wrapped in brown paper, hand labelled and with several beautiful stamps. The
cutters were well-packed in carnation pink styrofoam things and a few leaves
from GB. ;-)

About the Georgies tile cutters. They are rather nifty - little spring =
loaded
deal to push the tile out. They are especially great for hexagons and =
octagons
because these shapes are hard to get right. However, I miss the point with =
the
square ones. If you want to cut square tile, roll out a slab of clay, get =
two
square sides with a carpenters square, cut a piece of wood to exactly 4=22 =
plus
your shrinkage, and following the lines that you made with the square, cut =
one
direction and then the other. It is faster and there is less waste than =
with a
cookie cutter.

I have had several request for detailed information on the tilemaker I wrote
about.
There are 9 different sizes listed in the CM ad ( page 98, April issue ).
They range in price from $48 -$60. The company name is GEORGIES
1-800-999-2529
www.georgies.co
m
756 NE Lombard,
Portland, OR 97211
FYI - I took it to my class & showed my students one time & they were turning
out tiles like professionals ! I think it is a great toy.
Let me know some experiences other people have with them.

Another tip on cutting tile shapes round a pattern: cut AWAY from the
corners. if you cut up to the corner plastic memory will often make the
corner "stretch" or grow out of shape, so cut from corner to middle
every time.
