When applying to shows and there is a choice between the "sculptural" and
"functional" ceramics categories, and your work is both functional and
sculptural, which category is the best choice? I could use some advice.
Thanks.

Jan,

I would think your work would be fine in either category, although I can't
answer for the sculptural competitions.

Past jurors for our Strictly Functional Pottery National (SFPN) clearly
liked pieces that were interesting, whimsical, sculptural etc. in addition
to being functional. Strictly functional doesn't mean strictly boring or
non-sculptural. One entry last year might have seemed purely sculptural,
but the slide clearly showed that it was a functional set of containers.

If you would like an application to next year's SFPN, send your mailing
address to me. The deadline for 1999 is January 30, 1999, and the juror is
Warren MacKenzie. This year's show will open May 3, and it should be on our
website then -- or soon after.
