John Baymore's was a delightfully insightful response on the problem,
and is no doubt correct in most points. But I've been using a similar
Shimpo professionally for over 20 years, and have not needed to replace
the ring yet for hardening, although I have had to adjust the tension
(due to wear or shrinkage as John cites) several times. If there is
plenty of rubber on the ring still, adjusting the tension (loosening one
or two bolts and sliding the rubber wheel assembly closer to the cone)
may solve the problem. However, it might be a good idea to replace the
ring anyway, since they've changed technologies, and Shimpo may not
produce the rubber rings forever...

If you find you need to replace the rubber ring, don`t bother buying one from
shimpo.I use the rubber o rings used to seal surage pipe.Just go to your
nearest plumming wholesaler with the old ring & match one up.john dellow
