Hi. I tried (unsuccessfully) to search the archives of this list before
asking this question.
I was wondering if anybody could point me at information -- either on the
Web or a book or two -- about how to create ceramic decals and where to buy
the appropriate supplies. I know that there are many sources for ordering
custom ceramic decals, but I would like to find out how to make my own and
possibly put to use my photographs and computer graphics skills.
Thanks for the help.

Karen:
A grad school classmate, Charlene Roth, used to make her own ceramic decals
using a photosilkscreen method. She gave a lecture/demo on it to a bunch of
us one summer (at California State Long Beach), and the main thing I got from
it is that it is highly toxic. And a very long and involved process. The
ceramic colorants were not the really bad part, but rather the binding agent
to hold them together until they were fired. I don't remember where she got
the materials, but I do remember that she did not make them herself, but
bought them (they came in tins much like mini house paint cans). And the
print studio had to be vented and cleared of studnets before she was allowed
to screen the decals. But they were gorgeous.

Karen , there is a good book in the Ceramic Handbooks( Published by A&C Black,
London) Ceramics and Print by Paul Scott. In addition to decals, he discusses
photographic processes.
Good luck,

Karen;
another book you might try is "Ceramic Screen Printing" by Albert Kosloff
ISBN: 0-911380-63-9
It is not strictly about decals but it covers (very broadly) the areas you are
interested in as well as how printing on glass relates to using decals etc...
