Hi all - I asked this question last week but judging by the replies, I don't
think I was too clear.
Can you mix dry transparent glaze right into a clay body ?? In the March 98
Ceramics Monthly on Page 12 - 13 an artist gives a recipe that appears to do
this. Has anyone ever tried it??
This just seems to be a huge NO NO that would turn kiln shelves to trash. I
have not tried it, but curiosity could win out here.

Chris,
The article indicates that a white clay body was modified by using 80 parts
clay body, 8 parts colorant and 12 parts transparent glaze. The transparent
glaze is most likely acting as an additional flux and changing the melt
characteristics of the clay body....but not to the point of losing structural
strength at temperature to which the pieces were fired.
Actually, a careful rereading of the article makes me realize that it doesn't
say "clay body", but simply "white clay". So that could be taken to mean the
addition of glaze mixture to a kaolin resulting in a clay body. The thing to
remember is that clay bodies and glazes can be very close in composition.
It's just the ratio of the components that makes it clay body or glaze. I
say, try it. Just don't put the test directly on your good shelf.

one of my 8 yr old students independently conducted this very experiment with
liquid ( not dry ) glazes....I just took it out of the kiln which I fired on a
separate shelf on kiln stilts at cone 05...it marbelized the clay with a matt
color...i doubt he used very much glaze...
