Hello All,
I just want to thank the many clayart folks who replied to my query re
building plans for a potter's wheel. I was astonished at the many
replies, and at offers to send me extensive information, at no cost.
Many thanks again.

nick,

you may be interested in some of these wheel plans. some of them are
momentum wheels with a
motor option. you should try a treadle wheel, you may be quite happy with
one. i'm going to try to sendthem as an attachment but i've never done that
before. i'll give you the websites too incase it doesn't work. the more i
think about it the more i wish i had simply made my own wheel. the plans
look a bit complicated at first but really there's not much to them. another
good resource would be charles counts' book "pottery workshop". ok here are
the addresses:

www.ozemail.co.au/~smithl/kickwheel.html
www.duke.edu/~msm5/pictures/treadle_plans.html
www.cclay.com/wwwboard/messages/833.html
also check the library for ceramics monthly april, 1988, page 83.

ok, i'll try to attach the stuff. good luck and let me know if you get this.

later, ky

Hello, Nick.

Unless you're really lucky and find a used wheel, I think the cheapest wheel
you'll find will be the Clay Boss, which retails for between $450 and $500.
My friend has one, and she's very happy with it. Maybe you could get your
nearest pottery supply company to put one on layaway for you? You don't say
where you live, but if there's a supply company in your town, maybe you
should go and talk to them--see what you can work out.

In the meantime, don't neglect the art of handbuilding. Have you seen
pictures of the beautiful pottery made by the Pueblo people in NM and AZ,
etc.? This is all coil-built work. A good grounding in hand building
techniques is excellent knowledge for any potter to have.

Many of our very best potters use this technique only. So, it's not a poor
relation. Hand building is an excellent place to start. Check some books out
of your library on this technique. It's a very demanding technique and
requires much skill and practice. A little book knowledge will help a lot.

If your library doesn't have what you need, ask the librarian to help you
find some appropriate books. They can order them in for you, usually for a
small postage charge.

Best wishes,

Cindy Strnad

Hi Sandy,

Did that inquiry come from Nigeria?
I have a feeling that this is probably not an uncommon scam for when
people advertise items for sale online. It's probably a form letter
where they fill in the item and price from wherever they gather the
original information. I notice they only mention the wheel at the very
beginning and why would you need to transfer title? This probably gets
sent to people selling cars, boats and other property online, I
suspect. The sad thing is, they probably get some "bites" from this
sort of thing, enough to keep "fishing". I do actually know a person
who responded to one of those Nigerian scam letters and it went to the
point where she was waiting for them to wire the money to her bank
account and send her the plane tickets to fly to London to pick up the
money! She believed it was for real! So I see why these scammers
persist.

Thank you for the alert. It's always good to be forewarned.
