Cracking has a complex of causes. Take a look at a good technical
source and see what the possibilities are so you can decide which
applies most to your case.
One good source is Hamer, under C for Crack and D for Dunting. A
quick look at the sketches shows that horizontal cracks are much
less frequent than vertical cracks in thrown ware. More horizontal
crack sketches under D for dunting.
Another good diagnostic source is in Harry Fraser's Ceramic Faults
and Their Remedies.
