Mike Imes asked me to ask for suggestions for some terra sig formulas he
can use with a class he's running this summer, and in which some of the
pots will be pit fired. Any suggestions for tried and true (or not) terra
sig for pitfire? Thanks.

I just tried a terra sig that might work for Mike on the pit pots. I do
saggar and pit firing using cone 5 B-Mix and used the OM4 terra sig on
two pots and they turned out to be very promising. One was even bisqued
first before the sig was applied.
The following recipe seems to be living up to it's name and is
attributed to Pete Pinnell:
Real Lip Smacking Smooth Easy Terra Sig
---------------------------------------
3 1/2 gallons water
14 lbs clay
2-3 Tbs. Sodium Silicate
(if using red clay substitute this with 1 Tbs. Soda Ash)
If using XX Saggar or OM4 let settle for 12-24 hours before decanting.
If using a less plastic red clay decant after 6-8 hours.
Spec. gravity of 1.1-1.2 is useful.
For those that would like to know how to determine specific gravity....
Weigh out 100 grams of water.
Weigh out the same volume of terra sig.
Divide the terra sig weigh by 100 grams.
Example- 120(sig)/100=1.2 spec.grav.
Good luck,

Here's a recipe that we used in our pit firing class. Very simple,
works well. Two hints I learned (the hard way) when applying: Be
careful not to burnish too soon or too hard (terrasig will scrape off)
and don't touch with fingers when burnishing (will leave fingerprints
after bisque--at least the red terra sig will, not sure about the
white).
*************************
Red Terra Sig: 1000 G Red Art
50 G Calgon water softener (acts as defloculate)
10 C water
White Terra Sig: use Ball Clay instead of Red Art (1000G)
**************************
*Add calgon to water first.
*Sift red art OR ball clay into water mixture
[If adding colorant to White Terra Sig, add it to the DRY ball clay. Do
not add it after ball clay has been mixed into the water.]
*Will take 2 - 3 days to settle (see diagram below)
*Suck out middle layer with turkey baster (sp???!)
*Keep in lidded & labeled container
