high-fire paper clay

Referring to a recent inquiry as to results on firing paper clay to Cone 5
and 10 clay.
From a discussion a while back. We've been making paper clay for nearly a
year now and we make it with many diffrent types of clay, and we have many
customers who have been sucessfully using blends that are in the Cone 5 and
Cone 10 range. The results are very similar to what they would be with the
same clay bodies without the paperclay. Glazes fit in the same way. the
color of the clay is tha same. Because the paper clay keeps the clay a
little further apart it tends to fire a cone higher that it normally would,
but for most people that woulden't make much difference.

Also, the clay tends to be just slightly lighter because of the space being
taken up from some of the paper that burns away, but for the most part,
the firing is very little diffrent, and results are very little difference
than results would be for the same clay without paper in it.

Could someone explain the above statement? How is having the clay "a little
further apart" going to make it fire a cone higher? Rosette Gault attributes
this to possible kaolin in the paper.

All I know is that it's significantly raised the temperature of my
earthenware clay. I use toilet paper to make my pulp and I doubt if there is
any kaolin there.

Also, mine takes my sig much better and the smoke effects are MUCH better. I
attribute this to the increased porosity. If I break a piece and look at the
shard it's black almost all the way through and I'm smoking LIGHT.
