Dear Leslie,
I know of a few formulas, but they are all essentially the same. Here is
one often used as a starting point:
Sawdust 1.5
Vermiculite 1.0
Grog 2.0
Fire Clay 2.0
Portland Cement 1.0
Alumina 0.5
Other versions decrease the amount of cement and increase the alumina,
which seems like a good idea. This is a lightweight, insulating castable,
equivalent to an insulating fire brick. People disagree on whether this is
suitable for arches, but many have cast entire kilns with this mix. Some
say not to fire such a kiln over cone 6 - 8, and others fire to cone 10. It
is a beautiful mystery.
Michael Mayer directed me to the Castable Soda Kiln Project site:
http://www.mpgallery.com/kiln/kiln.htm
In their reference section they list the above formula along with the
version they used. They fire to cone 10.
If you wish, you can e-mail me privately and I will let you know how the
kiln construction works out.

To Colin Lewis: re: your castable brick formula, are we talking
weight or volume here?
