Since I receive Clayart in digested form, I will not know whether the
following news has already been reported until tomorrow morning.
The home and studio of Karen Karnes and Ann Stannard was completely destroyed
by fire after a firing on Saturday evening, May 9th. They were able to escape
with their lives, their car and one credit card. All else was lost - years
of work, a cellar full of pots made over the past 50+ years, glaze formulas,
tools, an incredible collection of books, all personal and profession
records - all gone. It is indeed a devastation.
But we can rejoice that Karen and Ann are still with us - and that their life
and work will keep on.

Jean,
I can't begin to imagine the bewilderment and devastation that Karen and
Ann must feel, but I know, as a member of the clay community, that our
hearts and prayers go out to them.
Is there a monetary fund set up, at this time, to help defray the cost of
necessities they may need in the immediate future? I'm sure there are a
number of Clayarters out there willing to lend a helping hand.

As well as helping out Karen Karnes and Ann Stannard, we should all
consider contributing to CERF the Crafts Emergency Relief Fund.
Someone please put Karen in touch with them...they have helped out a
friend of mine...They make arrangements with materials and equipment
suppliers for discounts and sometimes donations. Promoters to allow them
into shows at the last minute, whatever they can help with. They have a
revolving loan fund, but, the due to a small budget and large needs the
max loan is only $2,000. There is a form for submitting assistance
requests on their web page. There, but, by the grace of God(dess) goes
us. We should support this organization and the businesses which help
them do their work.
Their Web address is:

Tim,
Thanks for the plug for CERF... we all get so many "pitches" from
organizations that often spend more on salaries and lush offices it's a
rarity to see an organization like CERF in action. As a former board
member I can testify that most of your contributions in fact a very large
percentage goes directly to artists in need... very little is spent on
overhead... this is probably the best charitable investment you could make!
The Rosen Group has donated to CERF since it's inception... it's the one
place I know every artist we deal with could agree about. In addition to
the funds that CERF provides (often within just a few days of a tragedy)
there are free exhibit spaces at markets (yes, ours) fairs, discounts on
supply and equipment replacement and many other benefits that go to
recipients... most artists that have received funds, agree that the money
is important... but they always add that they never before felt so
connected to any support network of caring people... (all of you who
contribute each year)...

Jennifer going out to check the kiln...that's cooling.

The tragic fire at Karen Karnes studio is a reminder to all of us who have our
kilns in an enclosed space. This is the second fire I've learned about this
week that totally wiped out an artist--Sally Theilen of Davidson, MI.
I would caution anyone who has their gas kiln in an enclosed building to be
sure that the walls and ceiling are lined entirely with fire-code drywall. No
matter how big the structure, fire is a real danger and fire-code drywall
significantly reduces the risk. Two layers are even better. A high quality
fire extinguisher is a must (not some toy bought at K-mart) and must be
accessible BEFORE the kiln.
