"sawdust"?

This brings back memories of trying everything from Brillo Pads to
Bathroom Cleaners...

Last June, our guild (Syracuse Ceramic Guild), had our annual Raku Picnic
at the Cortland Art Park (NY). We invited a guest artist (Ned Krouse)
from Rochester who works extensively in Raku to lead the topic. One of
the items we brought up was how to clean that annoying residue off the
piece after smoking/reduction. Of course we all recounted our tales of
green scrubbie cloths to oven cleaner to brick walls, but Ned had the
best suggestion yet... "Bar Keepers Friend". I have to tell you, after
the Picnic, I stopped at the grocery store on the way home and picked
some up. It works wonders. You don't even have to scrub hard at all.
It devolves it right off with a little light scrubbing and water. Ned
said he believes its the 'oxalic acid' in the cleaner that does the
trick. All I know is I want to put a stickie note over the label that
says " Rakuers Best Friend".

Hope I've been informative as well as entertaining.

PS- "Bar Keepers Friend" can be found where you find other cleaning
powders like Comet, Etc.

BTW- my very first kiln should be arriving around Thursday. I'm
counting the minutes. Just wanted to share that....

Bon Ami and steel wool is what I used to use.
