Hello, experts: I have a dilemma. I am on another Internet discussion list,
this one about bichons frises, little white dogs with which some of you may
be familiar. I have been on this list for two years, almost since it was
started. There were 30 people on it then, now there are about 700.
In a week, New England bichon owners from the list are meeting in New
Hampshire for a get together. A month or so ago, I decided to make
commemorative mugs for the occasion. I am inlaying porcelain with a slip
design of a little bichon, with writing on the back denoting the event and
the date.
I've been doing pottery only since October, and I misjudged the time the
process would take. I have 18 dry and inlaid mugs (well, some are vases. I
am not too great with handles). None has been bisqued, glazed or fired.
I work in a community pottery, with a largish electric kiln, and there is
grave doubt that I will be able to bisque, glaze and fire these items in a
week.
I am looking for a simple recipe for a clear glaze for a single firing for
cone 6 porcelain. Something you have used, and that you know works. It
looks like I may have one shot at this, and I am hoping so sincerely to be
able to give these mugs to my internet friends.
If you can help, please email me asap!
thank you very much!

Try Westwood 520 clear if memory serves me. I'm not at my studio. My
experiences with this glaze are cone range 5-8. You might have a problem over
thick slip, but I've used this glaze over thin washes of slip. Most of us
have underestimated our time and worked our self crazy. If I'd played it safe,
reliable & dependable I've gone into medicine like my Mom wanted anyway.
Joy in Tucson Joanie's 40th birthday was a blast.
