I gave a workshop on Soda kiln building and firing in Rock Srings Wyo.in 1987.
They had soda ash straight from the soda mines. There was some impurities but
interesting results. It was really fine, strong flux and volitulized well. It
was also free. (from the miner workers to their neighbors)

Marcia,
you might want to mention that Soda Ash is realy Sodium Carbonate and
not Sodium Chloride such as Rock Salt just to avoid confusing the
discussion.
