A craftsman friend of mine ask me to solicit opinions on the $199 cement
wheel advertised in CM - a kick wheel for small to medium work. He wants
to explore clay and is also interested in a used kiln, smallish. He is
in NE Alabama. He was very curious about the cement wheel I would
appreciate anyone's opinion that has used one. TIA

Sandra,

I haven't used the concrete wheel, but I did get a chance to talk to
Stephen Jepson, who's picture was on the earlier advertisements for it. The
impression I got from him was that it's a wonderful toy, good for
demonstration purposes, perhaps to carry to a show, generally play with. As
for a permanent wheel, it may be all right for a light hobbyist. You would
surely want another wheel to do heavier, more frequent work, I would think,
although third-world potters have done wonderful work with far less.

Had it for 15 years, used it intensely for two and it spun like a top
when we donated it to an Art Center.

It served as a great place to start.

Hi Sandra,
I, myself, learned to throw on an old, home made kick wheel with a concrete
wheel, 2X4 frame and a tractor seat. It looks like some thing out of the
Flintstones. I must say that it was perfectly adequate to start out on,
but doing anything over 4 to 5 pounds was quite a chore. I missed the ad
for it in CM mag, so I don't know how much they want for the thing. I
would suggest your friend to keep in mind that he may very well "outgrow"
this wheel's capabilities in a short time.
Of course, it all depends on how the wheel was constructed; how heavy the
concrete slab is and what shape the fly wheel is in.... (as with any kick
wheel) I admit, the one I first used was fairly primitive.
In short; Buyer Beware.

Thanks to all for the imput on the concrete wheel. I have forwarded all
opinions which are mostly the same to my friend. I myself, had been
curious about it for the fun of taking it outside on mild days - but the
admonitions that it works best for vertically disadvantaged people cut me
out of the picture - 6'2" - again, thanks to all for their imput.
