I agree that it is not appropriate to refer to any midrange work as
maiolica, but otherwise the above is a little extreme. Contemporary
maiolica glazes do not contain lead, for very obvious reasons. Otherwise
they are quite true to the original maiolica glazes, and should obviously be
referred to as maiolica. When you say that maiolica was not to be used, you
are of course referring to the pieces with elaborate painted imagery.
Simpler maiolica pottery was and is widely used as ordinary tableware, and
the glaze certainly should not contain lead.
For anyone wanting a good catalog of maiolica, the Corcoran in Washington DC
mounted a wonderful maiolica show about twelve years ago, and in the
basement of the museum they still have zillions of catalogs, which they are
selling through the gift shop for five bucks. They do not have them on
display, so you have to ask for them.

There may be something to this. Yes, you may have something there. I think
we are eliminating altogether too many toxic factors from our lives, and as
a result, we are becoming a race of snivling, sensitive wimps, subject to
infection or inflamation from a world of harmless, minor, inconsequential
toxins, like lead and cadmium and chromium. So, PUT THE LEAD BACK IN. Lets
show 'em how tough we are.
