saggars smoke and glazes

Gavin,

Thanks for the information about John Leach's work with saggar firing. Byron
Temple used to make tea jars that he fired in saggars to cone 10. I tried the
same process and found it rather simple. The seal as you say was important.
If it leaked too much, all the smoke would be gone.

I've always wanted to have high-temperature smoke AND glazes. When I tried it
years ago I ended up getting blistered and bubbled, awful glazes in the saggar
fired pieces.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to solve it? I would love to give it
another go.

Rick,

From my Penland Concentration (1977) notebook:

Albany Liner (Salt Glaze) Cone 10

Note: Used by BT in Saggar Pots

85 Albany Slip Clay
15 Nepheline Syenite
2 Bentonite

If you don't have any true Albany you might try one of the substitutes. I mixed
some using ART's Synthetic Albany and use it as a salt liner. Not the same glaz
as in the good old days but OK.

I have one of Byron's tea jars which he fired during the session. Just took a
look at it. It is stoneware and is not bubbled or blistered inside. Can't be
sure but looks like the Albany Liner fairly thin.

Good luck.
