Here's something that could be really great for Clayarters or others
intersted in pottery. I've just returned from my third, wonderful five
day visit to Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico , just four hours southwest
of El Paso, TX. I have loved every minute of each trip, learned a few
things, had fun and bought lots of pots! The people and pots are
fantastic. One doesn't often see the variety and quality of work that is
produced in this village of 2,ooo people where roughly 300 are involved
in the making of pottery. My visits started two years ago with a
contact with Mike Williams. He has been my contact and guide ever
since.
I have just learned that two pottery making classes will be held this
fall in Mata Ortiz. Students will accompany anthropologist Mike
Williams and study under Carmen and Jesus Veloz. They will learn all the
aspects of the Mata Ortiz method of making, painting and firing white
earthenware. Included in the package are the pots students
make, the molds used, brushes made from children's hair, excursions to
mine clay and visit archaeological sites, and all meals at the Posada de
las Ollas Inn. One of the highlights is the traditional Mexican barbecue
and fiesta on the final night.
I've done most of the above and can attest, as can my friend Mel, his
wife, my wife, a former student and three other friends that a Mata
Ortiz trip can be a truely memorable expeience and provide fond
memories for a long time to come. I highly recommend the trip and
workshop. I own four wonderful pieces made by Carmen and Jesus, a
talented and extremely likeable couple.
Students stay at the Posada or with a local Mexican family. Total cost
for the 7 days, 6 nights is only $409.00 double,$449.00 single.
Transportation from El Paso, including airport pickup and return, can be
arranged.
