show ratings

In reading the numerous show "rating" publications it still leaves
questions about how well does pottery do at these shows. At a recent
local outdoor show a man who is a ceramic artist (making slab wall pieces
with airbrushed acrylics) requested I participate in rating the fair for
the Sunshine Magazine folks. I did and when later returning the rating
sheet to him learned that all sorts of participants were selected to to
rate the show...hand made aprons; broom dolls; etc.etc.etc. He then
averages the numerical ratings and submits them to the Sunshine Magazine.

Having said all this, would it be worthwhile to have as part of the SDSU
database as rating archive consisting of voluntary submissions from
Clayarters. Any takers?

Arturo,

I think ratings specifically for ceramics could be very useful. It would
need some standardization, with people categorizing their work by price
range, style. I would like to see a "money earned" breakdown, as well as
information on whether they talked to any gallery owners at the
show--something with as much or more value for later.

If your into alternative medicine checkout www.naet.com. This is an allergy
elimination technique that allows you to continue eating what you were once
allergic to. The treatment has an 80-90% success rate. The August1998
(current) issue of Natural Health has a feature article on the treatment.
Painless and no drugs. I would suggest that every potter is checked out for
allergic reactions to their clay(s), glaze materials and molds. Good luck,
and remember, allergies are nothing to sneeze at.

we have been doing juried craft shows for about 10 years, and have yet to
find a rating system that is consistent. to quote joni mitchell
=22people will tell you where they've gone
they'll tell you where to go
but till you get there yourself
you never really know
where some have found their paradise
others just come to harm=22
sunshine artist is a good start, but talk to other potters about specific
shows.
