slab roller problem

updated sat 12 feb 05

I'm having a problem with a 20 inch Brent Slab Roller. The roller seems
to want to go off the rails toward the turning wheel. I've had a new set
of rails welded on as the old rails were bending down due to lots of
use/abuse,(the weld was wearing away) its about 15 years old. Thought
maybe that would cure the problem. I've changed the wires lots of times
with no problems in the past but cannot get the roller to stay on this
time.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA Frank

To Frank - If the roller (clay smasher) is sliding on its shaft, there is a
set screw on either end of this shaft that the large roller is riding on - to
prevent and adjust for this problem. We also put a hose clamp on this shaft
to prevent the roller from shifting.

Also, the roller tends to roll crooked if both of the cables are not adjusted
to the same degree of "tightness."

We have the same slab roller you speak of and have used and abused it
continuously for over 22 years. Although we have had to replace many of its
parts, we have yet to wear out the rails.

Amaco (Brickyard Ceramics is their retail outlet 1-800-677-3289) now owns
Robert Brent and they have been most helpful over the years with parts and
trouble-shooting. (Because the people who work in the retail area are very
un-informed, be certain you ask to speak with an engineer in the Brent area.)

I believe that one of the wires which you replaced is tighter than the
other and is pulling the roller in that direction. check the tension.

Thanks Carolynn,

I'm pretty sure that sounds like the problem, sometimes the shaft that
the wires wrap around is pulled out of the bearing sleeve. I'll try the
hose clamp idea and see what happens.
thanks again,
Frank

My posts don't seem to be going through,
but maybe this will work.

My Bailey Slabroller, which I cherish,
is in a sad state. I have a feeling it's
something fairly simple, but am fearful
of messin' with it only to make things
worse.

The space between the rollers can no
longer be decreased.... widening it is
the only option. I recall that this
occurred previously and #1 Support Person
would mumble, "oh, yeah, it's this......"
and that seemed to do the trick.... from
my perspective.. but I never saw what he
actually did.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Thank you for thinking about it.

Hi Joyce

I am not sure about your particular slab roller, but our one at college
became progressively difficult to fine down and the problem was solved by
placing a series of hardboard sheets cut to size on the bed of the roller
under the canvas. You could get a really thin sheet of, say, paperclay by
adding two or more hardboard slices to the bed, or a fatter stoneware one by
using less. If this is not viable, perhaps a thinnish sheet of foam ruber
under the base sheet would help?

Looking forward to meeting you at NCECA,

Call Bailey and ask for help. I've always found them to be very helpful.
If you have a portable phone or cell phone, call from the slab roller
and have them walk you through the fix while you are on the phone.

And use speaker phone while getting the tech support...2 hands are such
a nice option! Have your tool box nearby when you make the call.
