Thanks, Greg, for sending the plans to me! Once I return from a two week

I WOULD LIKE SOME PLANS FOR A SLAB ROLLER. THANKS IN ADVANCE. CATHY

Milton Markey on wed 31 jan 01

Hi Fellow Slab Roller Fans!

Some time ago, a fellow Clayart reader offered his plans for a homemade slab
roller. I think it might be Greg Lamont, in Iowa. Nonetheless, his offer is
probably in the archives.

Greg, are you still with us?

Best wishes!

In the cold Mojave Desert. The only thing naked today(other than my clay), is
the rocks and critters, such as the coyotes that made tracks on the north
trail here on the property.

i have a copy of the wettlaufer book. i am willing to xerox the pages and send
them out to those who are interested. i will only charge the 5 cents per page
it costs me and the postage. if you want it please e-mail me and i'll figure
out how many pages and start working at it.

The plans in the book Getting Into Pots by George and Nancy Wettlaufer, are
the same as in the article they wrote for Ceramics Monthly, Feb. 1977. Of
course, getting ahold of one of those might be as hard as finding the out of
print book! I have a the book, and also the CM article - Jim, if you're
interested in a copy of the plans, you could email me off-list. I used the
book as a required textbook for classes I taught in the 80's. Who knows,
there may still be some floating around this town! I know our library has
(or at least used to have, haven't looked recently) at least 2 copies.

Milton, et al,

Yes, I'm still with you, but the slab roller plans are not--at least for
now. As stated in the earlier posts, these plans came from the book
*Getting Into Pots: A Basic Pottery Manual*, by George and Nancy Wettlaufer.
This book was published in the mid-1970's and is now long out of print. Our
local public library had the book, but it has recently either been lost,
stolen, or culled from their stacks. My supply has been exhausted and
efforts to locate another copy through interlibrary loan have proved
unsuccessful. Previous attempts to scan the requisite pages into my
computer were less than successful as the photographs didn't come out well.
To my surprise, I've distributed 150+ sets of plans asking only that folks
send a SASE and enough money to cover my expenses incurred in making the
plans available. I still get weekly requests for the plans from people
coming across the earlier posts. Perhaps someone else out there can locate
a copy of this book and can get good quality scans of the plans that can be
posted on a web site??

I have to jump in here with the usual precautionary comment:

All though the book by the Wettlaufers and the article printed in
Ceramic's Monthly contain plans for something that was clearly intended
to be used and made, we are still talking about copyrighted material.
To copy and send to someone with no monetary goal in mind may be ok,
posting the plans on a site may be a violation of copyright.

Well, I've been saying for months I was going to do it and I think
they're finally up on the SUCAWS site at www.clayart.fsnet.co.uk. So
all the folks who have been wanting slab roller plans can now go there
and download them. I hope.
These are the plans published in Ceramics Monthly in February, 1977. I
made this machine soon after this was published, and it's the only slab
roller I've ever had. I can tell you from experience that it's not a
wonderful machine, but it will do the job for you, unless you want to
make really huge slabs. But I guess if you build it and it isn't heavy
enough, it would be easy to adapt it into a more rugged model.
Good luck with it.

I don't know where they are. My neighbor returned the article, so I
assumed the plans were there. I guess I should have looked before I
posted that message. I'll ask him what the deal is. Stay tuned.

A friend wanted the same info, so I posted instructions that I found for
making a slab roller here

http://www.r-mw.com/slabroller.html

I made the page just for my friend to read, but it sounds as if you could use
the info too. I priced out the parts @ Home Depot and building the roller
would cost about $100.

I found the instructions in a book, and the comments on the instructions in a
Clayart thread. I hope that posting this information is OK, but if anyone has
copyright issues or wants me to remove the info I will do so immediately.

Yes, I have slab roller plans. I really would need to dust them off and
re-configure some of the components. I designed and engineered a one-meter
wide double slab roller which is my mainstay today! Had a manual turnwheel
on it for umpteen years until I found it too much of a hassel to use as my
slabs got bigger and bigger; i.e; 3'x4' a shot. So, I electrified it with a
two way power motor. Now all I do is flip a switch to make the rollers
reverse at each pass through of clay. I just rolled out several 28" x 24"
slabs of clay. this week. Took about 15 minuets each.

JB,

I appreciate the encouragement - I did some searching for plans and came up
with several hits, but the links were old enough that they wouldn't work
anymore. I'll keep looking - it's not like I'm really in desperate need
right now but would like to at least have a start on something before
winter gets here.

Elizabeth,

Thank you for the information - I've been looking at the Brent Mini (found
one at $329 plus change). However, I really would like to try building
one - call me crazy. And, being the cheap (not frugal - just plain cheap)
person that I am, I think I can probably scrounge or find someone to help me
manufacture most of what I need.

As for construction - I have the resources for whatever I lack in the way of
capabilities or tools, so yeah, I think I'd like to try. Unless, that is, I
can find one really reasonable and then I'll just make the necessary room if
I need to.

Up til now, I've either begged the use of the slab roller at school or =
used a heavy-duty rolling pin with square 'dowels' as spacers to =

The problems:

1) I'm retiring this semester and will no longer have legitimate access =
to the equipment in the pottery lab at school.

2) I'm getting a little lazy and would like to build a small slab =
roller for my home studio instead of using the rolling pin.

Anyone have a set of slab roller plans they'd be willing to share? =

For just one person in a small sudio, it is great.

Also, the northstar portable tabletop.

I could highly recommend either one of these machines
depending on just what you intend to do with it.

Both models less thatn $500. And I have to say that even
though I am in the camp of winging it on machinery, a slab
roller is not a project I would tackle unless I really knew my

Hi Lori,

If you will keep on going with those hits you will find the info you need to
build a slab roller for a fraction of what a new one cost { using "found"
items, Mine cost just $14 , but I'm a scrounger }.
The site you need, I believe , is from down-under so Ivor may be able to
help you find it . I read it and built a 18 " roller that would make slabs
up to 30" long. It is a four cable job with 2 2" black pipe rollers and a
set of bookshelf brackets ( NO welding needed) . It requires that you use
varying thickness plywood and hard board shims . I am making another one for
30" x 60" slabs. Many people had trouble with this design stretching the
cables if put in a strain and then it wouldn't make smooth slabs. I came up
with a additional trick to keep the roller wires from stretching so badly.
As I am just recovering from a terminal computer virus , I don't have the
information on hand any more. I could probably get it again , but it might
take a while. If you want me to look for it , let me know ,and I will try.
You can contact me at hanktaylor(at)dtcweb.net. I believe the book that this
info came from has some copy right issues so I can't send the plans to you
by email, but you can do what I did and get them from the Australian website
( I have this thing about staying out of lawyers offices and a nasty streak
of honesty that crops up now and then). But I could probably get some
pictures of my slab-roller to send to you before I dismantle it. It may be 6
months or so before I tackle building the larger edition.

PS, When I can sell enough pottery to have free cash floating around I
will buy ready made ,but right now the business just barely carries itself
and my monthly medical costs / Rx ( $600+ ).

I have had a number of requests for more details on the
construction of the bi-directional slab roller I designed
and built.

Visit:
http://www.wendtpottery.com/slab_roller_construction_plans.htm

for more photos and as time permits, I will include turbocad
drawings of the linkage and drive train.

Michael Wendt
