Greetings,
Does anyone know of a source for Georgian red clay? What I saw was high
fire stoneware that is the color of light coffee when wet, and dark brown
when fired.
Thanks in advance,

Do you mean Georgia clay? "Lizella clay" might be the one you describe. It
comes from the Echeeconee Creek in Crawford County, Georgia. The Merrit
family mines it there on Pottery Road in Lizella, Georgia.
You can talk to Mike Merrit, or his Daddy, Ray who has run the operation
for years behind his home. They dig the clay, dry it and bag it rewetted
with just enough processing to get the sticks and stones out of it.
Call Lizella Clay Company 912 935-8389.
This company has shipped all over the country for years and used to market
their clay as a good "school" clay. It is too! Be warned that so far as I
know few people have been successful in making this clay water-tight even
at cone 9. It seeps like crazy! And is a georgeous color at Cone 6. It is
quite dark at the higher temps and can melt at the higher cones due to the
high iron content.
Also in the area is "Ocmulgee Red Clay" which is sold dry by the Cherokee
Brick and Tile Company in Macon, Georgia 912 781-6800. I think that this is
the clay that Ron Myers told me he uses tho I'm not sure if he uses it
"straight" or not.
There are retail outlets which sell these clays but I'm not sure who they
are. I think Davens in Atlanta does but you can call your retailer now that
you know the names of these 2 clays. Davens advertizes in Ceramics Monthly.

Sounds like this might be Lizella clay. Try Highwater Clays in NC (704)
252-6033.
