electric firing with a controller

We fire two Scutt kilns with controllers to cone 5-6 on a regular basis in our
community arts center. My question is, when/if the thermocouple on the
controller fails, what can I expect to happen, meltdown, shut down ????? they
are not sheathed and look fairly corroded. Earl Brunner in beautiful, down

Hi Earl,
Look in your kiln manual. The control will display "FAIL".
Usually if a type K thermocouple looks like it will fail soon........it
will.
Replace it now & save a possible bad firing.

My understanding is tha as a thermocouple wears out it reads temps as
lower than they really are. Try putting a cone in the kiln to test the
accuracy of the thermocouple. Like Chris says, if the thermocouple fails
your controller probably wont fire at all, not overfire.
