I use a speck clay made with manganese. Sometimes (often) the manganese
specks poke out farther after =5E6 firing. I use a dremmel tool with a
silicon carbide bit. That can be expensive to buy but definately worth the
trouble.

The dust created when doing this is something that you certainly might not
want to breathe. Manganese has some pretty nasty consequences in the
body....... a malady that is apparently misdiagnosed (or actually IS....saw
an article on this recently) Parkinson's disease.

You'd want to use an appropriate respirator and control the dust
contamination in the studio so you don't get exposed later. This comment
is really for those newer to ceramics on the list who might not be aware of
the health risks of things like this.
