DETAILS OF COMPETITION ARE AS FOLLOWS :-

Potfest Cyber-Space Competition ..... "SACRED CONTAINER"

As well as the internal competition for those exhibiting at the Penrith
Potfest this August, there will be an online section with open entry.
This will only exist in cyber-space and will be judged purely by those
taking part. The winner may not be the most accomplished, the most
technically competent, the most challenging but it will be the most
popular with all those taking part. Potfest is a non-elitist event so
all entries will be anonymous before the judging. Names and other
information will be added after the winners have been chosen. It is
hoped that all the entries will remain on air until September 1999 when
entries for the next competition are posted.

This year's theme is "SACRED CONTAINER"

Materials other than clay may be included but must have a complimentary
rather than a primary function.
There will be no size restriction for the actual piece.
One submission per entrant.
One chance to take part in the judging by each entrant.
Images should be submitted in either jpeg, bmap or tif format, size not
exceeding 800 x 800 pixels
The image file should be accompanied by the following information :-
YOUR NAME
ADDRESS
TEL. No
EMAIL ADDRESS
SHORT TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF PIECE -material, firing method, size etc.
ARTISTS STATEMENT - (if deemed necessary ...... and not too long
please!)

SUBMISSION DATES :-
Images can be submitted up to OCTOBER 1st 1998
Post to chris@cox1.demon.co.uk (that's a number 1, not a letter L)
Judging will occur in late October
Images only will be displayed on the Cyber-Competition page after mid
July. To ensure entry please don't leave your submission until the last
day!
And now the bottom line. Prize money will be catch 22, the number of
those taking part dictating the viability of this first competition.
There will be no submission fee so prize money will be from sponsorship
only. Number of entries will influence the degree of sponsor interest,
so do it primarily for fun and maybe together we'll make something from
nothing.
The winners will be identified and published by NOVEMBER 5th 1998 ( What
other night could there possibly be for the pyromaniacs party? )
As well as the winners, we will try to keep all the entries on the
Potfest competition site for a full year. Details of how to register
voting will be posted to those submitting an entry.

I don't know the full story but I remember my English Grandmother
complaining we celebrated Halloween but not Guy Fox day which is
celebrated in England and ?...I believe it has something to do with
Guy Fox trying to burn down Parliament. BUTTT I could be out to lunch.
good day for pyros...wonder if any pots were fired?

water the garden for at least three days..hooray!

Guy Fawkes Day--on November 5th, 1640ish, Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up
the Parliament. He was swiftly caught, tried, and hanged, drawn, quartered,
and burned. So every year the British honor this famous failure, Guy
Fawkes, with bonfires in which they roast effigies of unpopular politicians.
So you see, the British have always believed in finishing a job once started
and their odd sense of humor has historical precedent.

Sam:

and you a good Canadian in the Heart of Upper Canada that once proud bastion
of British heritage not remembering the anniversary of Guy Fawkes day, and
the Bon fires lit to burn his effigy.

for those of us who have loose ties to the brittish monarchy as we do in
australia, November 5th is the anniversary of the arrest of a group of
political activists in London who had plotted to blow up the then reigning
monarch [sometime in the last 200 years or so I think] with a huge cache of
gunpowder. The wicked scoundrels were caught and sublected to the justice
dipensed by the brutal english legal system of the day. Thereafter the day
of the capture of these anarchistic personages was celebrated with
bonfires, firecrackers and burning effigies of the main protagonist of the
rebel group a Mr Guy Fawkes. The day was known as Guy Fawkes day. However
in Australia, legislation was passed a few years ago banning the use of
firecrackes and since then the day has lost its significance and is
largeley forgotten. When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s Guy Fawkes night
was right up there with xmas for fun and excitement for young and old. Huge
bonfires were lit and squadrons of adolescent and pre adolscents ran around
with huge bags of powerfull fire crackers blowing up letter boxes and
comitting various attrocities to the neighbour hood cats and each other. I
can understand why they banned it in the end because every year kids were
burned, blinded, maimed and even killed during this annual pyrotechinc romp..

so that is the significance of november 5th
