=3Csnipped=3E
=3ESecond- use a sheet of 3/4 ply wood, covered with a good canvas. Most
=3Ebuilders supply stores of the =22do-it-yourself=22 type have sheets that =
size.
=3Edo not pay extra for the grade called =22A-C=22- get =22C-D-X=22 which is=
a
=3Econstruction grade, with water proof glue (the X, means exterior grade)
=3EOne side (the =22C=22 side) will be smoother than the other- put that =
side up.
=3E
=3EStretch the canvas and staple it on the edges- it can be replaced quite
=3Eeasily, if if wears or is cut.

Heavy canvas can be purchased at any good fabric store, ask for 100% cotton
"art"canvas, the type used for painters canvas'. Should be between 5 to 8
dollars per yard and usually 60 inches wide.

Michelle
In Oregon, who herself just purchased some canvas for work tables!

We purchased canvas from a store that makes sails and other items for boating.
They have different grades-some more loosely woven and I am pretty sure they
are cotton. My husband got it for me and did get the best grade. It is quite
wide-about 60" so it covered well with left overs for other purposes. Other
than a boat store, tent and awning stores sell canvas, they cover cushions for
porch furniture, etc. Most cities will or should have such stores available.

Good luck

Canvas is a heavy, coarse thread, tightly woven cotton. Any good fabric
shop should have it. If that fails, look in the yellow pages for an awning
repair shop.

What I actually use is a very heavy grade of blue denim (Like the cloth
used for heavy Blue Jeans), mostly because I happened to get a bolt of the
stuff at a price that was hard to beat.

I just went to the fabric store =26 asked for canvas. It is 100=25 cotton, =
and
they had it in two weights and textures, plus more colors than you could
imagine. Awning stripes, etc. - I bought plain vanilla heavy weight.

If you are unable to find the fabric as suggested you might try the
canvas drop cloths from Home Depot. They are reasonably priced and a
good thickness for covering a table.Found in the paint dept. I also buy
artists prestretched canvas frames used for oil painting (Fredrico) in
several sizes and pour plaster in them. They stack against the wall and
can be taken down to use on the table to dry clay. A portable plaster
drying board that does not get plaster into the work area.

I suggest you rethink the use of canvas in the studio as a covering for
work tables and/or wedging surface. It will fill with dried clay and
subsequent pounding, working, etc will fill the air with clay particles
which may be seen or not. Further, I think the smooth concrete surface is
ideal for wedging. It doesn't break up like plaster and is reasonably
absorbant. So easy to make: build a sturdy table, form with 2x4's so you
have a 3-1/2" thickness and fill with redi-mix--cheap and easy. NL
